Overtime kills millions of employees
GENEVA: A joint study by the World Health Organization and the
International Labor Organization
has found that working 9 hours a day, 55 hours a week or more, increases the
risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke.
It is the largest global research study of its kind on the
relationship between working hours and health, the
results of which have been published in the latest issue of the research
journal "Environment International".
According to a World
Health Organization (WHO) press release, the study used two systematic
reviews and meta-analyzes, with data from 37 comprehensive studies on heart disease
and 22 comprehensive studies on stroke. Statistics analyzed.
In all, more than 1.6 million people participated in these 59
studies. The study covers more than 2,300 surveys conducted in 154 countries
between 1970 and 2018 at global, regional, and national levels. The analysis
found that in 2016, 398,000 deaths from stroke and 347,000 deaths from heart
disease were due to long working hours.
The death rate from stroke was 19 percent higher than in
2000, while the death rate from heart disease was 42 percent higher, which is
certainly worrying. Not only that, 72% of deaths in men were due to constant
work stress and Overtime, while the majority of deaths were in the western
Pacific and Southeast Asia.
Those who died from Overtime were between the ages of 60
and 79, while those between the ages of 45 and 74 worked 55 hours a week or more.
In light of this research, the World Health Organization recommends reducing the workload on employees
